Eco-conscious activites are intrinsically rewarding in and of themselves. But in Pittsburgh, being a green company can gain you a good reputation as well. For a few years now, an organization called Sustainable Pittsburgh has overseen something they named the Pittsburgh Green Workplace Challenge. The Challenge lends credibility to the environmental activities of its participants via third party verification. For every activity that meets the Challenge's criteria, the particpating organization will gain a certain number of points. The company with the highest score in each size category wins and is honored at an annual banquet.

The accolades aren't limited to for-profit groups. For the first time, this year nonprofits and colleges/universities were in the running as well. In light of this new development, the Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh have entered the competition. The choice to enter has paid off for them. The CMoP earned enough points to get second place in the Medium Nonprofit cohort.

No detail was deemed too small; the Museums fine-tuned their recycling processes. Having been overlooked for years, photocopying was shifted from one to two-sided. The greatest share of points gained by the Museums was due to installation of LED light fixtures. The use of LEDs has only recently gained favor amongst art museums and the like. Displaying artworks requires a high quality light source and for years LED lighting was not seen as up to par. But now technological advancements are bringing more and more curators to consider using LEDs. In addition, studies have come out showing that there are no known negative effects from commercial LED lighting fixtures.

Pittsburgh is on the rise as a national leader in eco-friendly technology. The Pittsburgh Green Workplace Challenge proves that the city is willing to commit to these new priorities. And the city has been homebase for green businesses for a number of years now. Take for example, Laface and McGovern Associates, Inc., a Pittsburgh LED light manufacturer, who has been responsible for numerous light installations around the downtown area.

Many companies will do what is enivronmentally responsible out of a sense of duty, but incentivizing these actions through programs such as the one discussed above can't hurt. These types of actions beautify cities inside and out. And Pittsburgh is more beautiful than ever before.
